Haiti Immersion... Day 5 - Trinity School

One of the strongest combatants to poverty is education. Particularly education for girls. So many children in Haiti, and around the world, miss the opportunity to learn because of poverty. Modest school fees, standard uniforms and very basic supplies may sound like fairly simple things to provide. However, it is far out of reach for many Haitians.

Morning students heading home for the day

This afternoon our group toured Trinity School. The two story building houses Kindergarten through 6th grade classes for well over 100 students. Most of the students attend the morning session. However, in the afternoon there are some kindergarten through 3rd grade classes just for girls. (I really love that they are making space and empowering them!) Each child receives two meals every school day. Because we know, it is hard to learn with a hungry tummy.

Trinity School tuition, food and supplies are all provided free of charge. The families are just asked to provide the uniform. This school is changing the systematic cycle of poverty for these families. Without Trinity School these children would never have access to education. Educating the coming generation through these schools and following up with programs like HELP (Haitian Education and Leadership Program) are going to provide long term solutions to the issues in Haiti. In the wise words of Erin Murphy, Haiti is not broken! However, there are things broken in Haiti.

Trinity school is focused on hope and has a vision for the future. They are actively making plans and taking steps to add the 7th through 9th grades to their school. That will require an addition to their building. It looks like they are up for the changes and challenges ahead. I am so glad to support them through HTF. The future is bright!

The plans for the 7th grade through 9th grade include building another story up on the roof!
